08: Don't Underestimate the Weather
In this week's issue: Luna struggled to breathe, warnings about Bulldogs, Drake surrendered his dog and scoops more.
Friday was an absolute scorcher in the UK, the thermostat peaked at 32 degrees where I was - how about you?
As glorious as the warmer weather is, it has some very serious consequences for our dogs and I witnessed this first hand with my English Bulldog called Luna.
Knowing that the weather was going to be unseasonably hot I woke up early and took Luna for a walk before the heat got too much – it was 21 degrees at 6.45 am.
Despite taking a water bottle with me, and resting regularly in the shady spots, Luna really didn't take well to the heat. We returned home pretty quickly as she was panting furiously almost as if she was gasping.
From 7.30 am until about 8.45 am I sat with her while she lay on a dog cooling mat, an oscillating fan at max speed blasting around her and me drip-feeding her water by hand.
It took almost an hour for her breathing to normalise.
I was scared. She's never reacted like this before.
The moral of this story is, don't underestimate the weather. It can be can incredibly dangerous for all dogs, particularly flat-faced dogs.
Here's what I did to keep Luna cool for the rest of the day:
- Drew the curtains/shades on all windows and doors, particularly where Luna likes to rest
- Kept water bowls filled with cool water
- Closed windows and doors to maintain a cool climate
- Placed cooling mats around
- Turned on the fans
- Monitored Luna regularly

Owners Urged to 'Stop and Think' Before Buying English Bulldogs
As a bulldog owner, I found this appeal from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) really pertinent to share. New research from RVC has revealed English Bulldogs have lower overall health and are calling for prospective dog owners to think before buying one.
Dog trainer Cherri Wuff Lucas revealed on Instagram this week that Drake's hectic tour schedule meant he needed to surrender his dog for a better home from home. Well done Drake for realising what was in the best interest of his furry pal.
